• I have been following the thread on the lack of award space from the US to NZ.

    As an airpoints gold how easy/difficult is it to use airpoints to upgrade ?

    If flying the Coral Route can you just upgrade from discount Y as there is no premium economy?

    Are awards/upgrades more available flying from LHR?

    I'm getting really tired flying via SYD on UA.


  • FWIW.........Flown Y+ LAX-AKL 3 times in the last 8 months... once as Jade (A$), once as Silver (A$), once as Gold (Comp).... upgrades cleared on first and third trips (both Monday night departures) .. but not on the second (wednesday night dep). Not sure if that holds ANY significance!;)

    The upgrades LAX-NAN/RAR/APW can be applied for from discount Y.. but of course they are standby... I don't mind that on the LAX-AKL in Y+ because if it doesn't clear.. well... Y+ is a nice "fallback" position!

    I wasn't prepared to risk it when I booked LAX-NAN.. so I paid the flex fare (wasn't that much more than the cheaper ones anyway) and went for a confirmed upgrade...

    Of course as KF points out they hit you separately for each leg... although for the shorter NAN-AKL/AKL-SYD I've just put in for the standby ug...

    Lots of A$.. but then I'm doing it for "fun" and had them to spare...so I didn't mind....

    Murphy raised his ugly head (natch!) and now my LAX-NAN flight is on FJ... not terribly happy about that..... Ah well.. at least the UG carried over....

    I can't find anything on FT about FJ's C product.........:(


  • The USA <-> NZ nonstop flights are the hardest to upgrade on.

    The flights via islands are easier, but beware NZ will charge mileage upgrade for both NZ <-> islands and islands <-> USA even if ticketed as a single through flight, this makes the upgrade almost as expensive as on the nonstop despite getting a far inferior product.

    Premium economy -> business is an easier upgrade to get.
