• Can get Aeroplan or UAL miles from flying 'inexpensive' AKL-CHC flights on AZ?

  • So I guess if I will only be buying cheap weekend fares then I should not bother signing up since I will not get any miles anyway?

  • Yes Origin Pacific fly between AKL and CHC, but not direct. Need to go via NSN, WLG or PMR. Not sure how good the connections are. They also have a FF program (http://www.originpacific.co.nz/special%20offers/flexiflyer) but its heavily revenue based (even more so than NZ airpoints!!) and requires having an account with Origin with min balance of NZ$500.

  • That sounds like an error - NZ domestic fares are normally structured so that the cheapest mileage-earning fare is higher than the highest non-mileage-earning fare.

Yes it is weird. I went to http://www.airnewzealand.com/default.htm and priced out a one-way from CHC to AKL on 27 Nov and all of the options come out to US$130.50. However, on the NZ version of the site I notice that the prices are lower. Not sure how they get away with that.

  • Unfortunately, Alitalia don't operate between Auckland & Christchurch either on their own metal or codeshare - however I'm not sure if miles from AZ would count for status on either aeroplan or mileage plus.

Air New Zealand does earn miles on those programmes - but don't award miles/points on flights in L/G/S/K booking classes - if booked on the .co.nz website they're described as 'smart saver' fares. All other paid fare classes on these economy-only flights earn miles/points/dollars.

Qantas domestic flights as far as I'm aware between AKL/CHC earn on all classes - but not for Mileage plus or aeroplan. Might be in luck if you're an AA flyer.

Do Origin Pacific serve Auckland/Christchurch? Do they have any frequent flyer scheme?

  • That depends on the booking class of your ticket.

If you price it out on the Air NZ web site (at least the US version) it will tell you which fares are eligible and which are not. Strangely, I was looking at CHC-AKL one-way, all the fares were $130, but some were eligible and some were not. Maybe based on time of day, but I'm not sure.

These are inexpensive weekend trips...so I assume they woudl not be elgible.

What booking classes are elgible / inelgible?

  • It depends on your buying patterns. All fares are one way so there's no concept of weekend fares (ie needing a Saturday night stay) and the fare structure is like a low cost airlines with the cheapest ones going first (no last minute deals etc) so you'll probably find yourself booking Flexi Saver fares (mid range fares, which do earn miles) some of the time as well as Smart Saver fares (cheapest ones, don't earn miles).

The downside of earning UA miles on NZ domestic is that you earn actual miles flown, rather than a minimum of 500 miles like on UA flights. AC Aeroplan, which is also free to join, is better in that respect - a short return flight across Cook Straight from WLG to BHE, for example, would only earn 100 miles on Mileage Plus vs 1,000 miles on Aeroplan.

  • Its come up before on FT - book on Air NZ's NZ website for lower fare for domestic flights.

  • These booking classes are eligible.
