I found a video on youtube where the description says a mother lion eats her own cub! I didn't watch it because I didn't want to be grossed out, but why on earth would a mother lion eat her own cub!? I know it's nature, but still.. she's a mother! Usually they are really protective.
Actually it's the father that usually eats the cubs and the mother has to protect them but I guess if there was no food or it was killed then maybe.
Same reason a female housecat would eat her kitten or a hamster or just about any other animal at that... if it's sick or deformed, (or if it's just a female that's never had a litter before and is totally freaked out) it happens. Just the way it goes. If she doesn't think it'll make it, better for it to go to feed it's siblings than to rot or be eaten by scavengers.
Well, if her cub was killed (either by disease or by another lion) she may eat it. I don't think it would be very common, (though I know male lions often eat cubs) but if the lioness was hungry, it could happen.
hmm... Do you have children of your own? Sometimes eating them doesn't sound like such a bad idea. ;)
But yeah, that's just gross.
Usually, a female lion is very protective of her young, and becomes extremely aggressive when some kind of predator approaches them. However, in very rare cases, when there in no food around, they have no other choice but to kill the cubs and then eat them in order to survive. Or, when cubs are physically ill and most likely won't make it through, the mother will intentionally kill them. Again though, it is rare.
